LMIA Jobs for Americans
Americans have several pathways to work in Canada, including LMIA-backed positions and CUSMA (formerly NAFTA) work permits for qualifying professions.
Eligibility
US citizens do not need a visa to enter Canada but need a work permit for employment. LMIA exemptions may apply under CUSMA for professionals in designated categories (engineers, accountants, scientists, etc.).
Visa & Work Permit Process
Americans can apply for a work permit at the port of entry (land border or airport) or online through IRCC. For LMIA-backed positions, bring the LMIA confirmation letter and job offer. CUSMA permits can often be obtained same-day at the border.
