What Does "LMIA Approved" Mean?

A positive LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that confirms a Canadian employer has a legitimate need to hire a foreign worker. It verifies that:

  • 1. No qualified Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available for the position
  • 2. The employer has made genuine recruitment efforts to hire Canadians first
  • 3. The wages and working conditions meet Canadian standards
  • 4. Hiring a foreign worker will have a positive or neutral impact on the Canadian labour market

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for an LMIA myself?

No. Only Canadian employers can apply for an LMIA. As a foreign worker, you need an employer to sponsor your LMIA application.

How long is an LMIA valid?

A positive LMIA is typically valid for 6 months from the date of issue. The employer must use it within this period.

Does a positive LMIA guarantee a work permit?

No. A positive LMIA is one requirement for a work permit application, but IRCC will also assess your admissibility, qualifications, and other factors.

Are all jobs on this site LMIA-approved?

We show two types of listings: ESDC-verified LMIA approvals (historical records) and active Job Bank postings where employers have indicated LMIA support. Always verify directly with the employer.
