What is a CEC Draw?
A CEC draw is a category-based Express Entry draw conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that specifically targets candidates eligible for the Canadian Experience Class. Unlike general Express Entry draws that invite top-ranking candidates across all three federal programs, CEC draws focus exclusively on candidates who have qualifying Canadian work experience.
Who Qualifies for a CEC Draw?
To be eligible for a CEC draw, you must be in the Express Entry pool and qualify for the Canadian Experience Class. This requires at least 12 months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years. The work must have been in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation and performed with proper work authorization.
How Do CEC Draws Differ from General Draws?
General Express Entry draws invite the highest-ranking candidates from the entire pool regardless of which federal program they qualify under. CEC draws, by contrast, only consider candidates eligible for the Canadian Experience Class. Because the eligible pool is smaller, CEC draws have historically tended to have lower CRS cutoff scores. However, the number of invitations issued in CEC draws also tends to be smaller, so the difference in cutoffs can vary.

How to Improve Your CRS Score for CEC Draws
Even though CEC draws often have lower CRS cutoffs than general draws, improving your score increases your chances of receiving an invitation. Here are the most effective strategies:
Provincial Nomination (+600 Points)
A provincial nomination through a PNP adds 600 CRS points, virtually guaranteeing an invitation in any draw. Many provinces have Express Entry-linked streams for candidates already in the pool.
French Language Proficiency (+25-50 Points)
Strong French language results (NCLC 7 or above) can add 25 to 50 additional CRS points through the official bilingualism bonus, even if English is your first official language.
Canadian Education (+15-30 Points)
A Canadian post-secondary credential of one year or more adds 15 points, while a three-year credential or higher adds 30 points to your CRS score through the Canadian education bonus.
Strong Language Scores
Maximizing your IELTS or CELPIP scores can add significant CRS points. Achieving CLB 9 or 10 in all four abilities makes a substantial difference in your overall ranking.
CEC Draw FAQs
What is a CEC draw?
A CEC draw is a category-based Express Entry draw that specifically targets candidates eligible for the Canadian Experience Class. In these draws, IRCC only invites candidates from the Express Entry pool who qualify under CEC, which requires at least one year of skilled Canadian work experience within the last three years.
How often are CEC draws held?
CEC draws are held at the discretion of IRCC and do not follow a fixed schedule. Their frequency varies depending on immigration targets, labour market needs, and ministerial instructions. Some years see several CEC draws while others may have none.
What is the minimum CRS score for CEC draws?
The minimum CRS score changes with every draw. It depends on the number of invitations IRCC decides to issue and the scores of candidates in the pool at the time. Check the draw history table above for the most recent CEC CRS cutoffs.
Can I be invited in both a general draw and a CEC draw?
Yes. If your CRS score meets the cutoff in either a general Express Entry draw or a CEC-specific draw, you can receive an Invitation to Apply. You remain in the pool for all draw types you qualify for until you receive an ITA or your profile expires.
Is the CEC CRS cutoff lower than general draws?
CEC draws have historically tended to have lower CRS cutoffs than general draws because they target a smaller, specific pool of candidates. However, this is not always the case and cutoffs depend on the number of invitations and the composition of the pool at the time of each draw.
When is the next CEC draw?
IRCC does not announce draw dates in advance. Our prediction tool analyzes historical patterns to estimate when the next CEC draw might occur. Visit our Next CEC Draw Prediction page for the latest estimate.
