Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Canadian study permit take?
Processing times vary widely by country - from 3 weeks to over 16 weeks. Apply well in advance of your program start date. Check the country-specific estimates in the table on this page.
Do I need a study permit for programs under 6 months?
No. If your program is 6 months or less, you do not need a study permit. However, you may still need a visitor visa or eTA to enter Canada, and you will not be eligible for off-campus work or a PGWP.
What is the SDS (Student Direct Stream)?
The Student Direct Stream was a faster processing pathway for students from certain countries. It has been discontinued as of late 2024. All study permit applications now follow the standard process.
Can I start studying before my permit is approved?
You generally cannot enter Canada without a valid study permit or port of entry letter. If you are already in Canada on another status, you may be able to begin studying in some circumstances, but you should have your study permit before traveling to Canada.
